The MeshCAM program is a CAM program. It enables the generation of g-code u very quickly, and at the same time we do not have to be experts in using this type of software. It is an intuitive and very flexible program that offers many advanced processing techniques at an affordable price.
The MeshCAM program works with almost every 3D CAD program by supporting the two most popular vector file formats, which are . STL and . DXF. Works seamlessly with programs such as Rhino, Solidworks, Autodesk Inventor, Viacad, Blender, Sketchup, Tinkercad, Autocad, Alibre, ZBrush and many more.
However, if there is a need to make a part in 2D, e.g. cutting out a contour, then we can load a .DXF file (in R12 format) on the basis of which we will prepare the appropriate g-code.
MeshCAM also opens image files such as .JPG, .BMP or .PNG and allows their conversion into a 3D solid, which can then be processed manually by the operator (e.g. adding height by extrusion). Thanks to this functionality, users are able to achieve effects that would be difficult to achieve using traditional CAD programs.
Each detail we want to make requires an individual approach to process it effectively. If the CAM software does not provide us with the required toolpath strategies, we will spend more time manually finishing the part or lose the quality of its machining. We don't have to worry about such a situation with the MeshCAM program. We offer roughing and finishing machining. The finishing of the detail can be done using various techniques. The combination of the above processing techniques will allow us to produce any detail.
The program offers the following operating modes:
- Parallel Roughing (planar and 3D)
- Contour Offset Roughing (Planar and 3D)
- Parallel Finishing (X or Y direction)
- Waterline Finishing
- Pencil Finishing
Automatic wizard
Additionally, this program has the "Automatic Toolpath Wizard" function, which automatically selects as many machining parameters as possible for us, limiting the introduction of tool path settings to the necessary minimum. We choose the type of cutting tool, determine the desired processing quality, and the mentioned function will perform an analysis, and after a while we can start working. Despite everything, we still have full control over all toolpath settings.
Some details are difficult to process because they have complex shapes, which complicates the way they are mounted on the machine table. An interesting function offered by this program is the ability to add fasteners holding the detail to the project. We can do this directly in MeshCam, and not, for example, at the design stage in CAD. The program allows you to add supports to the detail so that it is attached to the table. Supports hold the workpiece in place and the tool is guided away from the fixture.
MeshCAM was designed to load large 3D files (both in terms of file size and detail size and complexity). Manufacturers of large components, e.g. boats, produce them on large milling plotters. However, in the case of jewelry processing, we work on machines that fit on a desk. However, in this case, we are usually dealing with very complex details and g-codes.
This was achieved, among other things, by supporting 64-bit addressing, which gives us access to the entire computer memory resource. It also supports multiple processors (separation of calculations carried out when creating a tool path among available processors). All this means that we are able to fully use the computing power offered by our computer. Thanks to this, the waiting time for generating the tool path (g-code) is shorter. In some cases, this will allow us to shorten the waiting time from a few minutes to even a few seconds.
Many programs allow us to manually define the work field. MeshCAM software also has this option, but we don't have to do it. In the program, we can select an option that will automatically determine our working field. We also have full control over the field to be processed. You can set specific fields/places to work by clicking on the 3D model or by loading an outline from a CAD program. This is extremely useful when we need to re-machine a certain place or we need to machine a small, detailed place without having to machine the whole thing.
MeshCAM supports the most common cutting tools, such as ball cutters or end mills. Using these tools allows for greater processing flexibility and shortens processing time. Good CAM software should not limit us in choosing the tool, and MeshCAM does not do this.
Thanks to built-in post-processors, MeshCAM converts g-code so that it works with any machine. It supports many machines without additional modifications, but if necessary, the post-processor can be modified to work with your machine. If the machine reads normal G-code, it will work with the MeshCAM program. The postprocessor is fully documented in the "Help" file, so you can easily make changes as needed. Currently, the program has prepared post-processors for:
Mach 2/3/4, Linux CNC, Fanuc, Haas, Shopbot, GRBL and Roland.
A trial version limited to 15 days is available for testing. During this time, the program has no limitations and works like the full version. However, after 15 days, we must purchase it to continue working. After purchasing, we do not pay any monthly fees and receive free updates for the current version of the program (current version is v7). If a new version is released within a year after purchasing the program, we will receive a free update to the newer one. For a period longer than one year after purchase, you will need to purchase a new version (but you can still use the older one without any problems).
The program works on Windows 7, 8 and 10. The minimum amount of RAM we need is 2GB.
The MeshCam Pro version has a built-in tool path simulator, which allows you to preview the tool's operation, but also the appearance of our element after processing, without the need to load a DXF file into an external program. Everything happens inside MeshCam Pro. Below is a comparison of both versions of the program
