LINUMERIC LPT

The Linumeric-LPT motion controller is an inexpensive device intended for users who would like to become independent from the LPT port of a PC running Linux. The device behaves like an external LPT port of the computer and provides the same functionality as classic control via the LPT port.

The controller is designed to work with the free and open LinuxCNC software. It is a kind of USB to LPT adapter. This opens up new possibilities for controlling machines using laptops and newer generation computers that are not factory-equipped with a parallel port. In addition, the adapter can function as an additional LPT port of our computer, increasing the available number of hardware inputs and outputs, thus providing the ability to support additional axes.
Another advantage of this inconspicuous device is the much higher maximum frequency of control signals than most PCs equipped with a parallel port. This gives us the opportunity to use stepper motor controllers with a larger step division, ensuring better operation of the motors, and it may also mean a higher machine travel speed. It is also important when servo motors are used, which usually require high frequency control signals to use their potential.

Linumeric-LPT works with the SSK-MB2, SSK-MB5 and SSK-MB6 motherboards offered by our company. A standard LPT cable is required to operate them. Please remember that the adapter is a computer port, not a machine port, and should be placed next to the computer and connected to the machine using the mentioned D-SUB cable.

LinuxCNC is open software designed to operate numerically controlled machines such as milling machines, lathes, 3D printers, plasma and laser cutters, and even to control a SCARA robot. This software works best on a dedicated version of DEBIAN Linux, which already has a built-in machine program (just like in Windows there is a notepad and a calculator). An invaluable advantage of Linux for more demanding users is the ability to freely modify it and add necessary functions. Information about the control program itself and the Linux system can be easily found on the Internet.

The device has a compact housing, a D-SUB connector with a female plug enclosed in the housing. Its undoubted advantage is the ability to immediately run a machine that previously worked with the LPT port, even with different software. For example, after the failure of our old computer with a parallel port, nothing prevents us from non-invasively switching to Linux control by purchasing a new, much faster laptop or a small office computer. With such a modification, we will only have to configure the machine's control software (LinuxCNC) without interfering with its electrical connection.

Another advantage of Linumerica is the ability to program default input/output states, which affects the safety of working with the machine. A simple application is dedicated to Linumeric LPT, which allows us to determine any states on each of the port pins. In the case of a hardware LPT port, when the computer starts up, any states may appear on it, causing unpredictable machine movements - e.g. turning on the spindle.

It is also possible to install the Linumeric interface on Raspberry Pi microcomputers, which will allow us to significantly save space at the workplace and is an interesting alternative for users who are slightly more familiar with Linux.

Controller operation and installation.
Plug the device into the USB port and then download the driver package from the manufacturer's website. The installation process is automatic and requires only a permanent Internet connection and entering a few commands in the console. Installation may take several dozen minutes.
Linumeric has two LEDs indicating the device status. Green – operating status and red – error status.
